Wrestling starts off with a W

Original Horizon Story Here

Opening the school season, the Warrior's wrestling team hosted their fourth ever home match on Nov. 12, against Weiss and Temple high school. The tri-school matches encompassed mens JV, varsity, and the women's team, allowing for one round against each school per team.

"It's incredibly exciting," Coach Kevin Beers said."My first year here, there were no duels on the schedule. We were able to get one, and [back then], I thought that was a huge accomplishment."

Varsity men's took on Temple as their first opponents, beating their team by a total score of 45-29 points. Their second match soon followed, where they played Weiss. Continuing with their winning streak, the Warriors once again emerged victorious with a landslide win of 55-29.

The Lady Warriors' matches landed back-to-back, taking on Temple first. With tremendous support from the crowd and from teammates, the Warriors eventually ended with a total score of 48-24 after many long battles. Weiss' match ended similarly, with the Lady Warriors beating Weiss with a closer score of 40-30 – making it the 14th consecutive women's wrestling victory.

"We're making huge strides [with the girls]," Coach Beers said. "When I first got here, there were 22 [male] wrestlers with only one female wrestler."

Even from the sidelines, emotions ran high and tense as each match cycled through. The wrestling team has put in an intense amount of effort into not only setting up the event itself, but also in building a team community that supports each other through both wins and losses.

"I take every match and every loss personally, even if they're not my own, because it's my team," Yeissel Dameras '26 said. "[There's] been a lot of emotions."

Although only the first of three home duels scheduled this season, the Warriors wrestling team has steadily asserted themselves as a formidable contender early on.

The men's and women's varsity teams look forward to competing again against Lampasas and Copperas Cove this upcoming Wednesday, Nov. 19.
