Westwood's Sonny Wang concluded a brilliant high school career by winning a gold medal in the 50 and a silver in the 100. It was the third straight year the Harvard-bound Warrior left state with a gold and a silver.
If he felt disappointment that he didn't win two golds, he didn't show it. My goal entering the competition was to end on a high note," Wang said. "I can't be mad at anything." Wang said he has a special "showcase" at home where he stores his medals. He helped turn Westwood into a state swimming power.
"I hope they remember me as a fast swimmer and someone to look up as a role model," he said.
In perhaps the best race of the meet, Wang and Texas A&M-bound Ben Scholl of Houston Cypress Fairbanks split gold by having identical times in the 50 free — 19.94 seconds. Hayden Bellotti of Houston Cypress Woods earned bronze at 19.99.
